Gateway is a government funded work transition programme that is designed to assist students with their career decisions. It provides an opportunity for students to gain first hand experience of what it is like to be successful in the workforce. At present, the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) is the funding authority that supports the Gateway Programme at Cullinane College.
All senior students are eligible for the Gateway programme. There is a screening process as demand is high and places are limited. Candidates are expected to have good attendance and behaviour records. All placements are probationary and Gateway students are required to carry out all employer and school expectations plus complete a variety of school and work-based academic assessments as part of the Gateway requirements. As students are out of school one day per week, it is the student’s responsibility to catch up on missed school work.
Gateway provides valuable learning and employment opportunities as well as strengthens pathways for students from school to further education and training or employment.
Students can gain specific vocational skills leading to future employment and benefit from making significant progress towards qualifications. Students complete a work placement and have their learning assessed against unit or achievement standards on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF).
