About Us

Cullinane College is a Catholic College which is an amalgamation of St. Augustine’s College and Sacred Heart College Wanganui.

The College is named for:

The Sisters of St Joseph of Nazareth whose long involvement in Catholic Education began in 1880 and is epitomised in the lives of religious women like:
Sister Vincent Cullinane
Sister Cuthbert Cullinane

Both of these women taught at Sacred Heart College for many years.


The Marist Fathers who ministered to the European and Maori people of the city and surrounding districts and staffed St Augustine’s College from its opening in 1944.
Father John Cullinane SM (brother of Sister Cuthbert) was a Maori Missioner to the Awa of the Whanganui River from 1936-1951.


The Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Palmerston North, who is the proprietor of the College, the first to be developed in the Diocese of Palmerston North since it became a separate diocese in 1980 under the leadership of Bishop Peter Cullinane.
